Frequently asked questions
General
Before completing the student intake questionnaire provided by BPM upon lesson enquiry, all prospective students and/or parents must first read the FAQ sections below, which outline important studio policies including scheduling, lesson expectations, materials, cancellations, and payments.
BPM reserves the right to update or modify its policies at any time, as necessary, to support the effective operation of the studio and its scheduling.
By proceeding to complete and submit the intake questionnaire, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to abide by the policies outlined in the FAQ section. If you agree to these policies, please proceed with the intake questionnaire.
Once the questionnaire is completed and registration fee paid, BPM will secure a weekly lesson day and time for the student.
BPM follows the same policies, guidelines, and instructions as set out for on-site lessons.
BPM requirements for home lessons include:
i.) A piano or keyboard (keyboards must have 88 weighted keys);
ii.) A footstool for younger students whose feet do not touch the floor;
iii.) A bench pad or seat cushion to achieve proper height at the piano keys, if necessary; and
iv.) A desk or sitting area with table to do theory work.
BPM will bring the appropriate supplies for teaching during a home visit, and for those students who are registering for or transitioning to home visits, please ensure that the home piano or keyboard is in good working order, in tune, and preferably in a location where there is minimal traffic and/or distractions.
BETH'S PIANO in MOTION (“BPM”) is located in picturesque East York, Ontario (Coxwell Ave. & O'Connor Drive) next to Cullen Bryant Park, which overlooks and provides access to the beautiful ravine of Taylor Creek.
There is street parking available with the standard three (3) hour limit.
BPM expects that a parking space or area will be available for use during a home visit. For any parking restrictions, arrangements, or instructions, please notify BPM in advance of lessons to ensure there will be no loss of lesson time, as BPM must abide by the student schedule and have ample time to travel.
Unlike most piano studios, BPM ensures the benefit of the entire lesson time for each student.
For studio lessons, BPM permits five (5) minutes in between student lessons to allow for arrivals and departures. Please ensure that the student arrives a few minutes before the lesson is scheduled, to ensure the full lesson time is enjoyed. Kindly remember that other lessons are conducted after.
For in-home lessons, BPM's travel schedule ensures that the student enjoys the benefit of the full lesson time, even if running a few minutes late due to unforeseen circumstances.
BPM makes every effort to avoid schedule changes, but reserves the right to do so when necessary. If the student's lesson time must be changed to a different day, or require a change to the lesson time, BPM will do its best to work with the student/parent(s) to find a solution that works for everyone.
Every reasonable effort will be made to schedule a makeup lesson when a student misses a regularly scheduled lesson. If a makeup lesson is successfully scheduled and attended, the missed lesson will not count toward the student's cancellation allowance.Students are entitled to one cancellation allowance during each of the following periods:January 1 to June 30July 1 to December 31
A cancellation allowance is used only when a missed lesson cannot be rescheduled through a makeup lesson. Once the cancellation allowance has been used, any additional missed lessons during that six-month period remain payable.Unused cancellation allowances do not carry forward into the next six-month period.At least twenty-four (24) hours’ notice by email is required for cancellations. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice, as well as any additional missed lessons beyond the one permitted cancellation, will be charged in full, except in emergency circumstances and/or at BPM’s discretion.Lessons continue year-round, including throughout the summer months, as consistency is essential for maintaining musical progress and skill development. Students retain their regular weekly lesson time throughout the year.If a lesson falls on a statutory holiday, a makeup lesson may be arranged in advance, subject to BPM’s availability.Summer camps, vacations, extracurricular activities, and other personal scheduling conflicts are considered regular absences and fall under the standard cancellation policy.BPM cannot accommodate extended vacations. Missed lessons beyond the permitted cancellation policy, or absent an arrangement approved in advance by BPM, remain payable in full. At BPM’s discretion and subject to availability, makeup arrangements may occasionally be offered, including extending future lessons to recover missed instructional time.Repeated cancellations or inconsistent attendance may result in discontinuation of lessons. In such circumstances, BPM’s four (4) weeks’ notice policy will apply, with weekly payments remaining due during the notice period.No-shows (including “no-homes” for home visits) without advance notice will always require payment in full. BPM may, where possible, offer a makeup lesson, but is under no obligation to do so. After the one permitted cancellation within a six-month period has been used, all additional missed lessons remain payable.For permanent withdrawal from lessons, BPM requires four (4) weeks’ written notice. Weekly payments remain due throughout the notice period. Temporary withdrawal does not guarantee retention of the student’s day or time slot, and BPM cannot guarantee future availability.There may occasionally be circumstances in which BPM must cancel a lesson. BPM will provide as much notice as possible by phone and/or email and will make reasonable efforts to offer at least one (1) makeup option. If BPM cancels a lesson and a makeup lesson does not take place, payment will not be required for that lesson.Please note that teacher cancellations and student cancellations are treated differently. When BPM cancels lessons due to illness, emergencies, weather, seminars, or personal circumstances, and a makeup lesson does not occur, students are not charged for those lessons. Such cancellations do not create an expectation that equivalent flexibility will apply to student absences.*Please see Payment / Late Payment / Interest Policies

Kindly wash your hands or have your child wash their hands before and after the piano lesson to ensure that colds do not spread to or from the piano keys. Piano keys for home visits MUST be sanitized just before the lesson starts. Students who are experiencing symptoms of cold/flu should not attend or host a lesson. BPM will attempts to offer a makeup lesson, but this cannot be guaranteed.
Fingernails must be short so that they are not making contact with the piano keys. There is no exception to this. If students repeatedly present with fingernails that interfere with the piano keys, lessons may need to be cancelled.
Students will be required to use the pencils and erasers provided to them, for theory and any other written work.
It is desirable for students to wear socks inside the piano area, for sanitary use with the piano pedals.
Due to student and teacher allergies, please refrain from wearing any heavy fragrances during lesson times.
Fees for piano books, practice notebooks, and any other materials used for lessons are not included in the lesson fees.
BPM will obtain the appropriate materials for you/your child – after discussion and agreement – of which is required to be paid for upon receipt/pick-up by BPM.
Students will be required to have a practice homework notebook, which will contain practice/feedback notes and instruction to you/your child.
